| they're 1060 tool steel with nickel plate. nickel is very durable, holds it's shine, and doesn't rust. Nikel is also one metal used in alloying stainless steel. as for the threads, all exposed threads are plated as well. the threads in the coupler shaft dont get plated because of limitations in the machines ability to plate inside parts. when i assemble the rods, the coupler gets packed with grease. this helps things move smoothly and helps to keep dirt and moisture out. as for the tools, here's a trick, take an old t-shirt and an adjustable wrench. place the shirt over whatever part you're going to undo and you keep said part from being scuffed. the coupler is also thick enough that i easily turn mine by hand. Plus, you shouldn't have to adjust this area of the suspension too often. Stainless would be too expensive and not as strong. -Ted
